About this piece

A chestnut mule with tall ears and reed-thin legs, one hoof lifted, four cream moons on its coat, heading right. The rider wears the rose coat and wide black hat, hair tied low, and holds a paper lantern on a long pole. Cream saddle cloth, black bridle, three ears of grass at the bottom, and the same sage plaster wall as the grey horse.

The mule is the animal the Folk Riders were built on, so it had to appear in the studies too. Its ears do most of the work.

Materials and printing

Print: every print is on matte paper with no shine. Archival matte is a 250 gsm off-white paper printed in four colours; fine art matte is a 200 gsm paper printed in twelve colours for smoother tones and deeper darks. A white border is printed around the artwork where the paper's proportions differ from the picture.

It is a print, not a painting: the surface is smooth and flat. Any brush or knife texture you see is part of the picture, not something you can feel.

Framed print: the same print in a wooden frame in black, white, light brown wood or dark brown wood, behind shatterproof plexiglass. Ready to hang, with the hanging kit included. There is no separate card mount; the printed white border does that job.

Made to order by Gelato (United Kingdom) and shipped from the production partner nearest to you.

How it was made

Some pieces start as a rough pencil sketch on paper, just to get the idea down. Others start as an idea from my imagination. Either way, I then use AI image tools to bring in the colour, light and detail and make the picture come to life. What you receive is a print on matte paper with no shine: it is a print, not a painting, so the surface is smooth and flat, with no paint texture. I say this on every page so you know exactly what you are buying.

This piece: my own idea, brought to life with AI image tools, printed on matte paper to order in the UK. The full process.
