Grey Horse, Lantern
A grey horse on impossible legs, a rider in a wide black hat and rose coat, a lantern raised, a sage studio wall.
Full image shown at every size. Where the proportions differ from the artwork, a balanced white border is added. Size guide
About this piece
A grey horse with legs twice the length they should be, standing square against a sage plaster wall, three cream moons on its flank. The rider sits upright in a long dusty rose coat, a wide flat black hat and black boots, holding a lantern high on a black pole. A cream saddle cloth with a black border, a thin black rein, three stalks of grass at the horse's feet. Made to look like a photograph of something that could never have been photographed.
The first of the Lantern Studies. Everything that is flat in the Folk Riders is rendered here as if it were real, which is what makes the legs so unsettling.
Materials and printing
Print: every print is on matte paper with no shine. Archival matte is a 250 gsm off-white paper printed in four colours; fine art matte is a 200 gsm paper printed in twelve colours for smoother tones and deeper darks. A white border is printed around the artwork where the paper's proportions differ from the picture.
It is a print, not a painting: the surface is smooth and flat. Any brush or knife texture you see is part of the picture, not something you can feel.
Framed print: the same print in a wooden frame in black, white, light brown wood or dark brown wood, behind shatterproof plexiglass. Ready to hang, with the hanging kit included. There is no separate card mount; the printed white border does that job.

How it was made
Some pieces start as a rough pencil sketch on paper, just to get the idea down. Others start as an idea from my imagination. Either way, I then use AI image tools to bring in the colour, light and detail and make the picture come to life. What you receive is a print on matte paper with no shine: it is a print, not a painting, so the surface is smooth and flat, with no paint texture. I say this on every page so you know exactly what you are buying.
This piece: my own idea, brought to life with AI image tools, printed on matte paper to order in the UK. The full process.
How big is big enough?
