Lantern Bearer, Chalk
The loosest of the three: a mule on stilt legs, a rider in rose, the lantern on a reed, a pale chalk-green ground.
Full image shown at every size. Where the proportions differ from the artwork, a balanced white border is added. Size guide
About this piece
The morning version, and the one with the longest legs in the whole studio. The mule is in loose chestnut strokes, the moons are larger, the rider sits high in a rose coat and black hat with the lantern hanging from a thin reed, and the ground is a pale chalk green with hairline cracks. Three tufts of cream grass at the bottom edge.
Where the sage and blue versions have the look of thick paint, this one is thin and fast, closer to an illustration than a mural. It is the brightest of the three and the one that suits a kitchen.
Materials and printing
Print: every print is on matte paper with no shine. Archival matte is a 250 gsm off-white paper printed in four colours; fine art matte is a 200 gsm paper printed in twelve colours for smoother tones and deeper darks. A white border is printed around the artwork where the paper's proportions differ from the picture.
It is a print, not a painting: the surface is smooth and flat. Any brush or knife texture you see is part of the picture, not something you can feel.
Framed print: the same print in a wooden frame in black, white, light brown wood or dark brown wood, behind shatterproof plexiglass. Ready to hang, with the hanging kit included. There is no separate card mount; the printed white border does that job.

How it was made
Some pieces start as a rough pencil sketch on paper, just to get the idea down. Others start as an idea from my imagination. Either way, I then use AI image tools to bring in the colour, light and detail and make the picture come to life. What you receive is a print on matte paper with no shine: it is a print, not a painting, so the surface is smooth and flat, with no paint texture. I say this on every page so you know exactly what you are buying.
This piece: my own idea, brought to life with AI image tools, printed on matte paper to order in the UK. The full process.
